Blood Types

It will be fascinating to know that even animals have blood types and sometimes they receive blood transfusions and we must ensure that the blood we’re giving to our dog doesn’t cause blood incompatibility reaction. Although the composition of blood in different animals varies, we will get to know here some features of the blood types.

We know the blood group system when it comes to humans revolve around three different antigens namely, B, O and A. The possible types of blood we have is A, B, O and AB and each of them can be Rh negative(-) or positive(+). The ‘AB+’ type blood group are universal acceptors which means they can receive any other type of blood and similarly, The ‘O-‘ type called universal donor which means they are accepted by all other blood types.

Dogs are supposed to have more than 8 different types of antigens attached to their RBCs and these antigens are named as Dog Erythrocyte Antigens and most of them are broadly classified under DEA 1.1, 1.2, 3,4,5,6,7. It is interesting to know that most of the particular breed of dogs will have the same blood type. But now, with extensive research, a new blood group has been detected in Dalmations which goes by the name, Dal Blood Group.

Unlike dogs, cats have only two antigens A & B. Which are way different than what is found in humans. There are no universal receivers and donors when it comes to blood groups of cats and most of the domestic cats have type A blood group and the exotic breed often has type B.

When it comes to herbivorous animals such as horse, it has 30 different types of blood groups and has 8 different antigens mainly, A,C,D,K,P,Q and U. Cows have 11 major blood groups which go like A,B,C,F,J,L,M,R,S,T,Z. Knowing all this information about blood types will definitely help you in the case of blood transfusion of your pet animals.
